Since 1994, each year the Evian Resort Golf Club welcomes the leading women golfers on the planet. Its commanding views of Lake Geneva combined with the quality of its greens and fairways makes this natural setting one of the players’ favourite stages on the women's professional tour. A few weeks away from The Amundi Evian Championship 2022, all of the teams at the Evian Resort Golf Club are hard at work to ensure this new edition of the major takes place in the best possible conditions. While awaiting the start of the competition, a look back at some dates and figures about the history of a club with a very special atmosphere.
1904: The town of Evian-les-Bains (Haute-Savoie, France) inaugurates the Evian Resort Golf Club. The first 9-hole course layout was born thanks to the Evian Water Mineral Company which bought a farm and the surrounding land from the Berthet family in order to construct the golf course.
1922: The course at the Evian Resort Golf Club undergoes its first major extension, transformed from 9 holes to 18.
1988-1990: The British architect Cabell B. Robinson (former assistant to Robert Trent Jones, an American architect to whom we owe over five hundred courses around the world) completely renovates the Evian Resort Golf Club, to make it a true championship course.
1994: The Evian Resort Golf Club welcomes players from the women’s professional tour for the first time on the launch of the Evian Masters. Antoine and Franck Riboud, the tournament's founders, have big dreams and enable the Evian Masters to be part of the Ladies European Tour right from the first edition. The first winner of the competition is Sweden’s Helen Alfredsson, who went on to be a three-time winner at the event (1994, 1998, 2008). The love story between women’s golf and Haute-Savoie begins.
2000: International recognition for the Evian Resort Golf Club takes another turn when the Evian Masters becomes co-sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour and the LPGA Tour (the North American women's professional golf tour, the most prestigious of them all). At the time, the Evian Masters is already one of the most important events on the golfing calendar. It is even considered by many as the “5th major” of the year due to its outstanding prize purse.
2013: The Evian Masters is renamed The Evian Championship. The Evian Resort Golf Club is currently the only club in Continental Europe to host a golf major. The course undergoes further renovation and becomes The Champions Course, a 72-par, 6120 metre course, affording breathtaking views of Lake Geneva and the Alps.
2020: The Evian Resort Golf Club opens its Academy, a 6-hole course named The Lake Course. Devised by the British architect Dave Sampson, the 885-metre long layout comprises six par-3s, providing an alternative to the 18-hole course. It is designed to enable both beginners and experienced golfers to train from start to finish in under 90 minutes.
